This book has a particular sense for me as in school I never was a good reader. It happened that after reading the first page I could not stop until I finished the entire book. Thanks to this I began to love reading. Reading the book introduced me into a fascinating world , as the author surrounds you in imaginary odors so vividly described that it is possible to truly smell them. It is really a unique experience , amusing and highly recommended.
The book relates the story of one of the most genial and abominable French men living in the 18th century. He was born in a fish market, his mother having abandoned him after giving birth. She was later discovered by the police and put into jail.
Since then Jean Baptist lived in different places, with masters who disliked his eccentricity : Grenouille´s body exhaled no odor from his body. Besides he always brought bad luck to those who received him, falling in disgrace after his departure.
One day he went to another town, searched for work in a small perfume shop. He learned their new ways of extracting fragrances and began to master adequate distillation methods with which he experimented to obtain his maximum objective : to capture the female odor, that essence that made them particular. His aim was to create a perfect perfume and to be acknowledged for his talent. So Grenouille began to kill a number of beautiful maidens in order to extract their "essence", their special odor.
After committing many murders he was discovered and he admitted his crimes without being able to justify them. The day arrived when he was to be decapitated in the public square at the sight of an immense crowd. When he arrived, there was complete silence. Something happened that made everyone believe he was innocent. The ten thousand spectators started to take off their clothes , and an orgy developed. And all this due to a few drops of the perfume he had created and spread into the air.
Disconcerted, he went to Paris wanting to die. He spread on him the famous fragrance and everyone approached him thinking he was an angel. They began to praise him, then to cut his hair, to scratch him and finally to eat him. So Grenouille died dismembered on the 26th of June, 1767.
